It is much different carving fresh wood (as the apple and plum) and dried wood like the arbutus; comparable to surgery and dissection.
These are 'rough' hooks, usable, and for the moment I delight in the experience of fostered mindfulness and increased awareness of the process of crocheting. Learning how to 'smooth' them further will happen at some point, perhaps.
In progress. That's a piece of dowel and the intent is to make a hook for Tunisian crochet.
The other is birch from a branch that has been hanging, broken, from a tree by Vic High since the spring with leaves dead and dried; the wood is soft to carve but seems hard and sturdy; not sure if this is the nature of birch or being in a semi-dried state.
