Wedded haiku
Ruby with jet dots,
A ladybug has landed
On my ring finger.
SLINKY
Came across a Slinky in perfect condition at a garage sale awhile ago which made me think they are making them again. Maybe they never stopped! But I hadn’t seen one in years, particularly one that could still ‘slink’ down stairs. And the jingle comes, albeit vaguely, to mind. After the initial admiration and enjoyment did not want to stick it away somewhere and have it become ‘stuff’ so I’ve hung it from one end on the deck where it bounces merrily, catches my attention nicely and often, likely puzzles the birds, alarms the cats, makes me smile.
Australian Bushmint (Prostanthera Rotundifolia)
A cloud cover this morning may be the reason the Australian Bushmint is sending out its fragrance without having to be brushed. What a glorious greeting as I stepped outdoors first thing. I ‘chanced’ upon it at the major plant sale at the University of Victoria this spring when I misread the time of the sale, arrived, not twenty minutes early as I had planned and looking forward to standing in line with other ‘planties’, but with twenty minutes until closing! I did find one Spanish Broom (Spartium Junceum) which I had been seeking but not my other ‘wants’. “Something fragrant!” I replied when asked what I was looking for, likely appearing a bit desperate. “Try the Exotics,” was the suggestion. Moving my hand through the leaves of the Australian Bushmint captivated me. It truly has a haunting scent. Since it reminds me of nothing I have previously experienced, the smell dashes around in varied segments of the psyche seeking recognition and, finding none, evokes new associations. I am told it is not hard to propogate,(the thought of a hedge of it makes me dizzy with joy), is drought resistent, and it has the most charming of accents.
