Birds: Finches and apples

IMG_8903I don't recall seeing finches eating apples before but these do.  (click on photos to enlarge)

IMG_8875This finch is larger and fluffier than the rest and I notice him sitting for longish periods on top of this suet feeder;  just looking around.

IMG_8878This morning he also spent time simply sitting on the watering dish.

IMG_8891I was watching him more closely than usual because earlier I had seen him on the apple like this (but this is not him) and rubbing his bill back and forth, back and forth, possibly grating the apple for easier eating/drinking.  I hoped he would repeat the performance and I could try to capture some images.  No luck.  I do plan to scruff up the apple surface later and see what happens.

IMG_8886These finches perched for ages here. It is an east facing wall and the sun was appearing so maybe they were 'basking'.

  1. Interesting that finches will try to eat the apple. I must give that a try. I do put oranges out for the orioles in the summer months.

  2. Hi Linda
I would be interested in whether or not Ontario house finches are attracted to an apple. I plan to put out an orange next and see what happens. I love orioles! I don’t think we have them here.
