Toilet roll cover : artist alert!

IMG_6855There was a small filler article in the paper about a designer coming up with toilet roll covers;  I looked into it; turns out it is a promo for a brand of toilet paper and looks like a colourful wrapper.  Well, darn.  I thought my friend here might have some company in the artistry of whoever created him.

I got him many months ago at a Japanese Tsunami Relief garage sale.  He had been donated and in spite of my effort to find out more about his origins no one had any idea  who had made him.

Over the years I have seen many toilet paper covers: the half doll with her knitted skirt; the poodle with loop-stitch fur;  crocheted flowers on a columnar base;  most recently, at the weekly church sale, a sort of fake fur figure in a hat with a poem describing its use – if it is still there next week I will get it and post it.

The original intent of a decorative cover was to allow an extra roll of toilet paper to be displayed and accessible in case a guest needed to replace a depleted roll and be saved the embarassment of having to root around in a cabinet or under the sink for the big package.

Do toilet paper covers exist as an art form?  If not, why not?  And if not, why not now?  Any takers?
