While looking for the tool that is meant to help one warp through a rigid heddle and which looks like a flattened crochet hook and so I was meticulously sorting through my assortment of crochet hooks thinking I might have put it there (I didn't!) ….. I came across these. Crochet hooks I carved from tree branches.
I was motivated and inspired by a blog post (this was ages ago or I would provide a link to it) that said it wasn't all that hard.
Well – it wasn't; it took some finagalling and that is always a challenge but the result was rewarding.
I took time to look at each one when I came across them yesterday, to handle them, admire them, enjoy them once again. They are definitely part of the 'slow movement' and worthwhile beyond the sum of their parts: the choice of materials (apple, plum, lilac, bushmint – garden!); the choice of tool (my incredibly sharp French jack knife – thanks again, Bob); the process (combining leisure and time and focus and intent – true wealth); the letting go of judgment and acceptance of what occurs.

wow…they are just beautiful. i’m learning how to crochet and had just finished a little hat and i wanted to learn how to hand carve a crochet hook for myself this weekend but gosh, it was a diaster. i almost lost my fingers so i really admire your hooks. you really did a great job. i really like your second one from the left with the bark. by any chance, are you willing to sell it??
