Church sale find: old smelling salts container

I don't think I would have figured out what this interesting object is had it not been for a fellow browser saying it was a smelling salts container.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I could detect no smell to the crystals so took it to my local  pharmacy to ask their opinion.

One of the friendly  staff unstoppered it and held it to his nose and said,  "Definitely smelling salts but faint."  He could smell ammonia.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Isn't it pretty.

And I can imagine some lady carrying it in her small purse just in case she felt a swoon coming on.
