They used to appear just before Christmas.
Now they are in the stores before Thanksgiving. The Canadian Thanksgiving. Today.
We started a family tradition many years ago where the kids were each given a box and could eat as many as they wanted when they wanted.
The boxes are so pretty in themselves and have made great storage containers.
Their individual wrapping is special; I don't suppose a machine does this. And the hat-shape likely suggested the mandarin description.
Peeling in one unbroken rind made for fun contests leading to the longest unbroken rind.
In Turkey we peeled the skin back and used it as a handle from which to eat the segment.
Sometimes the peel were hung to dry and then tossed into the fireplace – or better still, onto a bonfire – and the air became fragrant with orange.
This year this claim appears on the box. I have eaten four mandarin oranges so far today.
I guess it could mean five to ten of the fruits shown. But, in the spirit of the family tradition …..

I could easily eat 5 to 10 mandarins a day. I didn’t see them out in our stores yet, I better have a better look next time I’m there. I can just smell the aroma ….
Hello Linda
Now I am curious as to whether my remembering them being out at Christmas is from my Ontario days and if that continues. They taste as good as they smell!
