A container of these at the local grocery store with a sign that said "Gooseberries" had me querying the produce man because I had never seen gooseberries like this before.
It was a mis-placed sign. Which, of course, led to the question, "What are they?"
The man did not know. He said they had come in a box marked "persimmon" but he had never seen such before. Neither had I. "What do they taste like?" I next asked.
"Try one," he said and bit into one himself, warning me that there was a pit.
A bit of a crowd collected and soon we were all standing there nibbling on the – um, whatever.
It has a rather sweet flavour that reminds me of something but I can't think what. The texture is crunchy, sort of like a chestnut, sort of like an Asian pear. No one had any idea what they were.

Persimmon is a fruit that originated from Japan or China. It has several health benefits (Google will probably tell you some of them) It has zero fat and is high in fibre. I do believe it is supposed to help in anti aging. We tried them a few years ago in a cooking class we did each week. We would always get the students to try an unusual fruit or vegetable that they would otherwise never taste. How did you like it … and did you buy some?
Morning Linda. So are you saying these are persimmons? Confirm please. I did a google and got lots of info but no photos exactly like these. The texture is different from persimmons I have known. As is the taste.
I don’t think the picture is like any persimmons I’ve ever had, they tend to be an orange colour and look rather like a tomato.
