This is one of the first pieces to combine scrunching with free hand machine embroidery which I saw demonstrated at Narrative Articulations (using a darning foot as shown Aug 31 post).
I've called it High Voltage and it uses paper and window screening as the materials.
The feed dogs are lowered so you move the fabric around under the pressure foot and let the needle and thread 'mark' the material. You can use zig zag or a straight stitch and a combination of thread on spool and in bobbin. I bought a spool of multi coloured thread months ago simply because it was so pretty and I had never seen it before; this is the first time I have used it so extensively and happily.
This one happened at the same time as High Voltage as I was experimenting with sewing fragrant plants onto the screening with freehand stitching and deciding whether or not to do this on HV but decided to work the flowers in thread; however, this sample worked so well that I continued the background and now it is in itself a piece. It is not yet named but I think what it is called will suggest when I fold in the two triangles in the upper corners and attach some cord and turn it into a necklet. That is Australian bushmint and sweet woodruff scenting it. They will dry, of course, and I am interested to see how much flakes away with the amount of stitching I felt was right to hold the stems but not wrap them in web.
