50’s Plant stand …. upscaled

IMG_9983 Fifty years ago this would likely have had pots of African violets on the spiraling shelves – I seem to recall  a neighbour having one.

Today it seemed a good perch and display for some of the 'tools' when playing with fibre:  drop spindles and linen yarn.

Ooo, spindles! How much does the big one weigh? Can you spin quite thick thread on it? My homemade job is wonderful for very fine yarn, but I’d like something sturdier for knitting. Also I see you spin low whorl. There seems to be a huge fashion for top whorl spindles on the intenet blogs I visit and most manufacturers seem to make top ones. How nice to have a range of spindles too.

All garage sale finds over many years before I knew how to use them so they ‘chose’ me. The big one is heavyish – I tend to only spin thickish/thinnish fibre at the moment – the yarn on the shelves is not my spun – but that on spindle is. I learned about high whorl spindles and the one at top back was low whorl but I cut a notch in the bottom stem and now can spin both ways. I think I mentioned that I was taught on a chopstick stuck into a potato! Not sure if you have a long weekend – but happy one if you do – heck, happy one even if it is short.
