Revealing – and honouring – the essence of quilt through a mobius shawl.
The functional aspect of a quilted object – the batting – is seldom, if ever, seen. I wanted to ‘see’ it and let it be ‘seen’.
Raw fleece was chosen as the ‘filling’ and left in its natural state. A minimum of machine stitching (quilting) was done to contain but not restrain the fleece. Three bouillon knots were made to acknowledge the wealth of decorative aspects of most quilted objects.
During the process I realized that the fleece could be directed into the few channels created by the limited number of stitches but that it would take much more ‘quilting’ to have the fleece uniform and warmly efficient. And that the fleece used as an accessory was more clearly expressive but needed stitches to hold it together. A life metaphor, perhaps.
A mobius – well, because a mobius is magical. And because, with a shawl shape – I could!
