In this ongoing quest to surround self with meaningful objects I present some coat hangers crocheted with interesting yarn that has some history to it. (Wonder why the "coat" adjective; were original hangers perhaps sturdy wooden ones meant to hold heavy coats….)
Wanting to make some more and while strolling through my stash of wool and thinking that a coat hanger could become a record of past projects (as the stroll-through-stash-vest has proven to be) I came across the linen vest with leaves printed on it which is too worn and now ripped to wear as a vest so thought to rip it into strips and crochet it onto a hanger – a nice way of the three R's'ing it. However a test with something less special seemed a good idea.
So this skirt on the dollar rack at the local thrift store (is LTS a recognized acronym for this?) got ripped into a ball and……
…..started…..and
….finished. It worked just fine and I have no hesitation in ripping up the leaf vest into strips and covering another hanger with that.
I have crocheted up and around the hook with yarn as in the first three hangers shown here but with the fabric I tried something different – rubbed white glue onto the hook and just wrapped the strips of material around it – up to the tip and back down to the join and then cut the strip up a bit and tied the two ends together to finish it off. I am pleased with how this worked. It was fast and easy and one could simply cover an entire hanger this way. But I also like the look and texture of the crochet. Nice to have options!
That's a cutting of scented geranium tied onto the hanger bringing the garden indoors and adding scent.
It will dry and likely fall away from the hanger; then I will have fragrance underfoot in the closet.
Now I am working on hangers covered in cloth and providing a – wait, I'll surprise you. It is a work in progress but it feels like it will turn out as I am hoping.
