Here are the rugs that I mentioned on the wrist warmers post a few days ago and for which I am trying to find the name of the technique and also some history on it.
It's not really mysterious as to how it is done – squares of fabric are folded in half into triangles, lined up slightly overlapping, and sewn down their middle; rows added sideways. But what is a mystery to me is that I have never come across such a simply marvelous technique before and neither has anyone else who I have asked over many months of inquiring.
Did someone make it up!?!
From the looks of the fabric used in these rugs I would guess the era of construction was the Eighties; there is a lot of sturdy polyester in those squares and the patterns are definitely decades ago.

Never seen this before, but it sure is a great way to use up scraps of material.
Hi Crafty I agree about the use of ‘scraps’ in such a way as being so worthwhile and thus my puzzlement that it wasn’t done more or, if it was, that we have no ‘record’ of it. I continue to ‘wander’ into this…..
