Finches….nesting!…..not…….

The sight of this,  on the front veranda, alerted me to ….

this….and I felt happy at the thought of birds nesting so close by and viewable.  I wondered what kind of bird and if they, perhaps, were first time nest builders:   there seemed more material on the ground than on the ledge, but how interesting to see the bits of plant tips amongst the twigs.  I also worried that perhaps the human traffic to and fro would worry the birds but then had a chuckle at my ‘mere mortal’ status.

When next I went to the door to go out I could see, from behind the curtain, a pair of house finches around and about the nest and waited and watched but they seemed to be dithering and soon flew off so I did not have to disturb them as I left.   The floor looked the same as  before so I decided they did not retrieve dropped  materials.  The nest also looked the same.  When I came home a few hours later……

no nest!  Completely gone.  Not a twig.  The floor in exactly the same state as before so it wasn’t wind or animal that displaced the nest.  All I can deduce is that the finch parents-to-be decided the location of the nursery was not going to be suitable so they moved it.  I applaud their decision to not add  ‘feeling jittery about the surroundings’ to parenthood, but, oh, I was looking forward to having glimpses of the experience.
