Latkes and blintzes and hearty soup and hearty bread were what I enjoyed across many years living in Toronto with its Kensington Market Jewish restaurants.
Moving to Victoria seventeen years ago I discovered (via a food booth at Folk Fest) the Jewish Deli in the Community Centre and have continued to enjoy such cuisine in a most welcoming ambiance ever since.
This is a Nosher’s Plate, costs $9, and consists of (clockwise from 9 o’clock) : veggie kishka, noodle kugel, potato knish, lox and cream cheese on a bagel with capers and onion, gefelte fish with horseradish and beet, pickled herring, tomato, cucumber, and kosher dill, coleslaw. It is absolutely delicious!
The basket of bagel crisps and pickle is for nibbling while you wait for your meal. There are always fresh flowers on the tables.
