With Solstice less than two weeks away, the appearance of several windfall willow branches on a walk with Grandbaby got me thinking of a celebratory wreath.
One of the experimenting-with-shawl-pins (the one made from rope in the Greek braid) got put to use as the core. Weaving the twigs through the center as one would poke the stick through a shawl did not work: they kept shifting and I wanted them to support themselves, more or less and hold the design.
Then I started passing them through spaces on the rope circumference and this worked enough so I could arrange the golden twigs into sun (and moon!) rays.
Knowing when to stop is always a challenge: to represent the lessening light and encourage it with the bright rays but acknowledge the certainty of the increasing light: to take responsibility for being a part of nature. Sometimes it is just a matter of stopping and waiting and seeing if the piece is done, if the intent has been accomplished.
Some cotton thread was woven back and forth in the middle to secure the twigs. Then rosemary with blue flowers and lavender tips got picked in the garden and tucked between the thread and the twig ends. Above is how it looked on the back door in the final stages of construction.
Here is how it looks on the front door.
