The three doors have come off the cupboards above the counter beside the sink, hardware included; they now look like shelves with glasses and dishes in view, easily and readily accessible. I wonder how much time and energy is used opening and shutting kitchen cupboard doors. Without them there is a sense of time saved and the aspect is much airier and open.
This was not an accidental discovery: the best cupboards I ever had in a kitchen were floor standing bookshelves and I have been mimicking the experience ever since. The present cupboards are, thankfully, ten inches in depth, a perfect depth for display, for storage. Most kitchen cupboards are deeper and a nuisance, in comparison. Also, as a friend pointed out, a ‘book shelf’ cupboard space encourages us to get rid of the stuff that has accumulated and keep only what is useful and pretty. I wonder what Wm. (the have nothing that is not functional or beautiful in your home man) Morris’s cupboards were like.
