Out of the Ordinary

IDEAS ; COLLECTIVE CONSCIOUSNESS ; WORD-OF-MIND

I imagine many, many good ideas are floating around out there waiting on adequate expression. And I am one of the legions of frustrated people with such ideas.

Am reminded of how, more than twenty years ago, I (and others, I have such learned!) would use masking tape on the newly available disposable diapers so that they could be ‘re-used’. Now the option of ‘re-sealing’ them is standard. The cynic in me feels that this feature was initially obvious to the manufacturer but not offered in favor of the one-time-use-more-sales fact. What caused them to add it? Collective consciousness of enough of us using masking tape plus the competition of other disposable diaper companies? Some design guy finally able to convince some make-it-happen guys that there was potential in the masking tape idea his wife was using?

My present angst comes from the idea that toothpaste tubes (in particular as I use these daily) and other such receptacles would be vastly improved by the simple extension of inch tabs at the very bottom which could be turned in on themselves and hold the tube as it is folded as used. Do you see what I mean? I’ve adapted tubes over the years by attaching those twist ties that come with garbage bags. They work a treat, once started, but it would be nice to have them already in place. And I’d like everyone to have this option. And be paid for the idea, of course! A number of times I’ve sent the idea with diagrams and once with a ‘working model’ to my Toothpaste Company of choice – but – the idea, as far as I know, is still ‘floating’. Maybe word-of-mind will prove its worth and come into its time.
