Out of the Ordinary

Rain, plain and simple

After many days of sunshine, rain is happening. Not monsoon-type rain like in India or Belize. Not the peering-through-bangs type of water falling from the sky that Vancouver pours down. Typical Victoria BC Canada rain. But exuberant enough rain, today, so that I decided to put on shoes instead of sandals and a waterproof poncho before getting on my bike for the morning ride to the Deli. The sound of the rain dropping onto the vinyl of the cape was satisfying – complete stereo surround. On my helmet was yet a different music. And the rhythm on leaves was something else altogether. The rain has turned the brittle, yellow, dry grass to a soft, go-with-the-flow amber, in much the same way that a smile or a compliment or words of encouragement can soften me out of feeling cranky. Most people I spoke to commented on the rain and most of us agreed it was “needed”. But rain does require ‘protection from’- varying from a person going from here to there in a certain length of time and not having the chance to ponder it, to someone having the time to enjoy it but not wishing to absorb it to the skin. Thus we rationalize that it is “needed”. Those who can dance out in it and soak it up wholeheartedly, experience it fully – they can admit it is “wanted”.
