The red malabar climbing spinach is splendidly doing its thing! In their one gallon pots two plants sat chummily together at the beginning of the season as if gathering energy, pumping iron into large leaves, but now the climbing part of their personality has taken root and – wow – they are up and about. The initial shoots shot up the cedar support 1 x 1’s and have topped seven feet, still growing. Many other tendrils are waving wildly here and there and anyone sitting for any length of time near them is likely to have one or two of those lively vines twirling into hair or around an arm. They are delicious. Those large leaves were delicate in substance and taste; these multitudes of smaller leaves are firmer and more intense in flavour. They can be tossed into salads but the best is to snack on the leaves as the fancy and the garden stroll suggests. They are particularly nice at dawn with the evening cool still on them – but at noon, sun warmed, they satisfy as well.
