Recent encounters with the medical profession (and, oh, how vulnerable we are at such times) got me thinking about something I read many years ago. The opening sentence read something like, “Be aware of your doctor! What attracted him or her to the profession is not what you want in a caregiver.” It went on to expound the idea that fear was the motivator, money and power being sidelights of this, and worthwhile doctors, few in number, were those who had managed to recognize this in themselves and overcome it. I’ve had enough experience with this to relate and agree. And, western medicine on the whole is terribly restrictive in its diagnosis and tools, focusing on the body as an organism not a human being. Thank goodness there are (w)holistic practitioners out there. Hopefully we come across them before being further ‘sickened’ in the condition for which we have sought assistance. And, yes, I agree, part of the problem can be that many (most! some doctors feel) patients want, not assistance in their own healing, but an immediate cure. Like – prescription. Over and over again. Not an easy relationship. And, as I said, at a time when we are so very vulnerable.
