Out of the Ordinary

CBC RADIO OVERNIGHT ; SUMMER BREAKFAST

This morning the vessel of CBC Radio Overnight carried me to Prague and then Russia. The latter was a new destination not normally broadcast at this time, likely due to holiday scheduling. I had to listen with more attention and once again marvelled at how such a subtle difference in inflection requires more care for understanding. Yesterday a woman told me that one language uses the same word but different ways of saying it to convey meaning and that she once thought she was saying she didn’t eat chicken but was understood to say she didn’t eat tour guides. I find that astonishing. And frustrating that I cannot recall which language it was!

Rooibos tea. Saskatoon berries in creamy soy milk (soy milk has come a long way, baby, from that beany-tasting liquid!), handful of local cherries (alas not from my tree which has yet to be found and planted), three plump perfect strawberries, piece of toast and peanut butter, myzithra Greek cheese chunk. Outdoors with sun and wind and birds for company. July First breakfast. Happy Canada Day!
