In a high-end shop downtown saw knitted purses yesterday, clutch bags, wooden dowel-type handles, the kind you tuck under your arm. The gauge of knitting was large, three cables and stockingette in a pure wool. Ivory and brown and slate colours. They came out of New York and were priced at $182 and $200 depending on size. And, yes, the sales clerk, told me, they are selling. I questioned the ribbon that was threaded through them and tied in a bow – distracting and unnecessary (it reminded me of the bows that seemed to predominate on clothing for pregnant women years ago) and the clerk said she had removed the bow on hers and added a decorative pin. I like the idea of Knitting appearing in public thusly and then going out on the town.
