Out of the Ordinary

  • PERCHING PLACES

A man came out of a shop with a cup of coffee, went up to the car parked nearby and took something from the crease that outlines the door.  I thought he was picking away a leaf or something but when he popped it in his mouth I realized it was a lit cigarette and that he had ‘parked’ it there while he went into the non-smoking store.  He got in the car and drove away which made me recall watching another man retrieve a cigarette from the bumper of a truck that was clearly not his as he walked away.  Interesting where people are leaving their cigarettes during quick trips into stores.  It explains the burn marks on the ledges of storefront windows.  The scorch marks between pickets on a fence outside a convenience store.  A cig stand comes to mind, sort of like a bike stand, but in miniature, with slots where a person could stick his or her cigarette.  Something a store could install just outside their door.  Or maybe it’s more intriguing to observe the ingenuity of smokers.
