  • TWEAKING : A HOME

In this ongoing adventure of tweaking * a home, inspiration comes from everywhere because, in the process of – whatever you want to call it: homemaking, renovating, nesting, fixing-up – the antenna are out.

Every bathroom sink I come across now in homes, businesses (I don’t really need to visit the washroom in every restaurant: it’s research!), shops, magazines, free piles, I scrutinize for its suitability as the sink replacement in my bathroom.

Same with window coverings and here any and all fabric is considered: material, blankets, silver insulating sheets, tarps…   At core is an attempt to focus on what is needed (privacy at night, full view/light during the day, interest) rather than what has been provided. This widens the possibilities and increases the creativity; as in the case of the window treatment.  Sure there are curtains and drapes and blinds.  There are also shawls and afghans, shower curtains, rugs, pampas grass, yoga mats, sarees, table runners, pillows (linked together with kilt pins), men’s ties……  Etc.!  What is needed?  What would suit?

How people construct their own habitats in the simplest manner with natural materials  draws my attention, perusal and admiration.  I ‘study’ cabins and campsites, driftwood beach houses, makeshift shelters, doll houses.  I learn a great deal.  And reflect it in my home.  The melting snow uncovered the pieces of slate I bought awhile ago thinking they would be used in the garden but now I want to bring them indoors.  Not sure why or where but subsequent is a wish to do a beachcomb for some rounded rocks and bring these into the house, with the slate pieces, and see what is suggested…………
