VICTORIA BC : Filipino Lunch

The bright yellow awning on the building at 1709 Blanshard Street is an attention-getter and I was aware it was the  Community Centre for the Filipino-Canadian Community.

I was also told it served meals.  For some reason I thought Filipino food was hotly spicy so never had investigated this.

The food is tasty but, for the most part, not hot.  The people are very friendly, and changing wall displays give ongoing information about the Filipino culture.  It is a most enjoyable experience.  It costs $6 for a meal.  Dessert and beverage are extra, usually $1.  Side dishes are $3 – a hearty serving.

This was last Sunday’s choice:  (there was also a fish dish).
Included in the $6  meal was  rice soup  with vegetables .
The main course was chicken with roast potatoes and carrots (a sort of thick stew), rice, and pancit which is a thin clear noodle with vegetables and pieces of chicken.  The side dish was squash, okra and green beans in a coconut milk sauce.
It is all home cooking and any questions as to spicing or ingredients are cheerfully answered.  Two desserts were offered.
