PLAYING WITH FIBRE : COAT DRESS

This began with three garments (yes, from thrift stores) that were not suitable on their own but were too wonderful to pass up – so – they joined the stash.  First came a pleated skirt, a nice weight and the colour of beach stones.  Then came a cotton cabled sweater, tiny in size.  Finally a heavy cotton  turtleneck sweater with cascade cables.  The combination was not immediately apparent; it was while going through the stash looking for something else that suddenly  the skirt and sweaters nudged each other for my attention.  A number of considerations over a number of days as to what combination  finally resulted in the waistband leaving the skirt, the sleeves and ribbed bottom being cut from the ivory sweater and the sleeves of the slate sweater finishing it all. It houses the body loosely and is very much an example of clothing as architecture.  It is a nicely balanced garment with the dropped shoulders distributing the weight on the circumference.  Stress points of clothing are uncomfortable, cumulative, and not healthy.
