  • Two things to crow about

    IMG_4778
There was a crow sitting on the side of the curb staring across the road and as I passed it my tire ran over something on the pavement.  I looked in my rearview mirror;  yes, I had provided the means of cracking whatever nut the crow had dropped.  I've seen them fly over a hard surface and drop nuts but I've never witnessed one waiting on a car to do the job of cracking.

Later in the day, while sitting on the deck, I became aware of chickadees making fuss in the nearby plum tree – chirping madly and flying by me to land in the cherry tree, then back to the plum tree.  Then the female humming bird flew to the feeder  but gave it short notice; instead she kept flying around and around over my head.  Intrigued I wondered what was causing this behaviour.  Finally I stood up and went to the railing and said to the chickadees – "Have you just hatched an egg and you are telling me about this event? (In Toronto a raccoon would bring her babies to the screen door each year and wait until we noticed and admired them)  Just as I finished my query a crow appeared from somewhere and flew away.  Chickadees quieted down.  Hummer left.  Sorting out one's feelings about such things is often a challenge.
