Here is the sock wool knit into a K2 P2 rib for a couple of inches and then I increased one in each stitch, continued in the rib which was now a K4 P4 rib, cast off after three or four rows. The ruff edge can be worn toward the foot as shown or upward toward the leg. (This technique might work nicely on a cowl)
