Inspired by Margie over at Fern I decided to make some acorns and I agree, I doubt I would have been able to make just one, but – I could not find any suitable real acorns to get the caps. I checked several groves of oak trees and found a few smidgey acorns and a few mouldy caps but nothing that would 'top' an in-honour-of-nature acorn.
I did find chestnuts. Lots!!!! One nearly dropped on my car as I was driving along the road. I've been collecting them to scatter around the house because I have been told they deter moths and when you have a lot of wool in your home you want all the help you can get.
So I took one of the empty shells and made this chestnut to nestle in it. It's hand felted in the sink using warm water and a bit of soap; I love the meditative quality of hand felting like this. Then, once it was dry, I needle felted the lighter part. Wool fleece was used for both.
I like it as it is in its 'nest' but it seems to want to move on ….. so thoughts came of turning it into a finger pincushion (with a round of leather as its base to protect those of us who jab pins into pin cushions) …. but I also need a chestnut to state that leaves that I stamped onto a very interesting vest (will post about this in near future!) are indeed from a chestnut tree and not what a lot of people think of when they see similar shaped leaves from BC so I might attach this chestnut on the vest.
