Out of the Ordinary

Physalis aka Cape gooseberry

IMG_7310
Now that I can no longer snack in the garden on  berries and tomatoes I am pleased to be able to buy cape gooseberries in our local grocery store.  They are related to the tomato which has that fruit/vegetable issue of identity as does the cape gooseberry.  I have had them in both salads and desserts.  Mostly I just like to snack on them.

You can read all about them here. A wealth of information!

They are so pretty all wrapped in their cozy papery capes.  What Wikipedia did not tell me is if the husks (capes) yield a dye.  Anyone know?
