Out of the Ordinary

Socks are wasted on the feet!

Well, not really:  socks  keep feet and ankles warm, prevent  shoes from chafing and they  organize the toes.

But – so many people are now knitting socks from fantastic fibre  (alpaca, bamboo, cashmere, dacron etc.), in exquisite patterns and incredible colours and then the socks are mostly hidden by footwear and pant legs.
That is the waste – the loss of the feeling of satisfaction that comes about with the showing and sharing of something handmade;  the potential for communication because handmade items are people magnets;  the beauty of expression for beauty alone.

Some suggestions:  wear sandals when at all possible;  roll up your pant legs;  and/or……

Socks can be filled with bags of rice or sand and used as door stops.

Hang them in a window or a doorway.

Join them together toe to cuff and wear them as a scarf or cowl.

Turn a pair into a hat.

What have other people done to show their socks, I wonder?

  1. Socks make great mittens when you have nothing else available. Odd socks make great dusters, just dampen lightly and place on your hand and dust away. Pull off inside out and wash, ready to use again. Socks make great holders for pieces of chalk, the kids draw with the chalk and then clean away their masterpieces and then store the chalk again.

I used to use socks to wash my venetian blinds…one pair was slightly soapy..the other pair was wet with vinegar and water for the rinse wipe-down. Worked like magic.

  3. Hi Crafty I like that suggestion for sock mittens – a great way of getting them on view! And the chalk in sock is going to be put to use. Thank you.

  4. Morning Esther I have a venetian type blind and a duster just seems to move the dust around (and there is a LOT of surface area on a venetian blind to collect dust!) so your use of socks in this regard is most welcome. Thanks!
