Out of the Ordinary

Favourite Knitting Ladies : Thomas and Phillips

IMG_1152She died fairly recently and I had a brief phone conversation with her a few years ago, but oh, I would have loved to have known Mary Walker Phillips.

These are three of her books.

IMG_1159 Creative Knitting is about process more than pattern which encourages our natural inspiration to emerge and evolve.

There is a piece on her in Knitting in  America by Melanie Falick.

IMG_1154 Mary Thomas is referred to in glowing terms – when  you come across reference to her, which is rare.  I am not sure why and several years of seeking further information about her – who was she, when did she live, where,  why is she not better known etc. – has been unproductive.

Her books are beyond wonderful.

IMG_1156 I chanced upon the Knitting Book many years ago and every time I pick it up – to see what she has to say about rake knitting or check some bit of history or recall a technique  etc.- I find myself forgetting what I came for originally and simply browsing in great contentment.

The Knitting Patterns book likewise.

IMG_1157 The illustrations are delightful (and often humourous) and there are worthwhile photographs also.

IMG_1158 The pattern stitches are clearly given and invite innovation.

If anyone has any information about Mary Thomas – please do let me know.
