Likely when we wrap ourselves in a quilt or bedsheets we are somewhat swaddling ourselves.
Swaddling soothes and comforts babies and has for a very long time.
The idea for this Swaddling Sac came about with those thoughts and also with the memory of how, in those first few weeks after birth, we look at the size of our son or daughter and marvel at – how small ….. And then acorns and oak trees came to mind.
This is Henry. Modeling the Swaddling Sac with the cap above his ears.
This is with the ears covered – more a hat.
Fleece was chosen for the material because it is soft and light and warm and stretchy and washes easily. The body was a piece 14 in by 22 in; the hat 15 in by 7 in.
A very simple technique: sew each piece into a tube; on both gather one end with long running stitches by hand and pull until tight; secure with knots. Roll a piece of material into a cylinder and sew up and down on a machine a few times to stiffen it, then attach to top of hat to form the acorn cap stem.
Gather the body tube in the same manner. At the other end of the body tube make a one inch hem and machine sew. Cut a hole in seam on hem. Crochet a tie cord and thread through the hem.
Pop in baby.
Thanks to the Motheringtouch Centre in Victoria BC for the use of Henry and their location.
