KNITTING INTUITIVELY With Almost Anything

Knitting throughout sixty years in many places such as at a son’s graduation, in a dentist chair, during lectures, to induce sleep (virtually),  in public places indoors, in public places outdoors (KIP’ing)  led to the awareness of how satisfying and multi-faceted the activity is. With the contentment came curiosity which led to knitting with bicycle spokes, skipping rope, pool noodles, my arms,  porcupine quills and dowel as the knitting needles,  with fishing line, elastic bands,  rope, electrical wire, ivy, old clothing,   handspun polyester batting, dental floss, raw uncarded fleece and paper as the yarn. This led to writing a book about the experience.  And then I wondered …. could I knit with – actually with -  the book as the fibre …..   That was the inspiration for this piece.

SIMPLY …..  DOLLS

I could not bring the series of clothespeg English miniature pedlar dolls with all their tiny accessories which have gone to other families. The jointed soft sculpture ballerina doll and mermaid doll have drifted away.  I could not bring the doll I made by using my breath to fog a sheet of glass and then drawing out (quickly!) her image onto it. Or the doll that took form on a mirror from seeds and small pebbles, put outdoors to reflect the sun and the moon, altered by the wind and the rain and the birds.  But I could bring these five dolls. One of interfacing material.  One of beach combed objects wearing her fancy dress (the reverse is for everyday).  One with a hand felted head and body woven freeform on a wrapped warp loom with weft of casually spun raw uncarded fleece.  One knitted. One family.  Welcome ….
