Out of the Ordinary

Nuts and bolts : the edible kind

IMG_3997 On the right,  my mom's original recipe, with some changes made by me over the years.

6 cups Shreddies,  8 cups Cheerios,  4 cups pretzels, 2 cups roasted/salted peanuts

Melt in saucepan 1/2 lb butter with 1/2 cup veg oil

Mix in 4 tbsp worchestershire sauce,  1 tbsp garlic powder,  1 tbsp paprika,  1 tbsp onion salt

Pour over the dry ingredients,  mix well,  put in uncovered pan and bake in 250 degree oven for two hours,  stirring well each half hour.

This Christmas I decided to try a batch with Indian spicing.  That's it on the left.  It was a worthwhile experiment and I have since repeated it.

Basic ingredients up to and including butter and oil are the same.  Spicing is now:  1 tbsp each of turmeric,  ground cumin,  ground coriander,  garam masala.  Cook as above.

The recipes are guidelines and invite experimentation.  You might like to add chili or cayenne to the Indian version.  Or try Mexican spices.  Or herbs.

Enjoy.
