Before I learned that such a thing existed for toilet paper, I came across the paper towel equivalent at a garage sale.
The house already had a special holder for paper towels, thanks to one of the sons and a woodworking class.
A toilet paper roll holder! Holding two rolls!
It was soonest installed, replacing the single holder that was old and interesting and had been a find at a farm auction, but, it required time and effort and a bit of dexterity to replace the empty cardboard tube with a new roll.
This hadn't seemed a greatly onerous task, except that I seemed to be the one mostly doing the replacement: the males in the household seemed content to place a new roll on the floor underneath the depleted one and consider that their contribution; I was outnumbered by that gender, four to one.
But when this simple, one-step, off/on motion was in effect – well, the old method was never going to be put up with again.
I bet it was a mother with lots of sons who came up with the idea and then the design.
