The hat on the right, its evolution detailed here, has served me well in the cool weather over the years since I made it. But – it is pure wool and its itchy factor makes itself known if I go into a warm store or my own body's furnace heats up.
The properties of fleece fabric over the past few years are endearing it to me more and more. It is warm and light and does not itch! So I made the fleece helmet-style hat from a double-layered scarf; same design, more or less, as the wool one; this time the ear flaps, as you can see, can be adjusted from under chin to the shown way where the hat can be taken off and put on without undoing the fastener.
It was cosy in the early morning frost yesterday on its first outing, sat lightly when the weather warmed and I went in and out of stores, brim acted as a visor when the sun peeked out at noon, did not itch.
The body of the thrift store sweater from the first helmet-style hat became this hat. Click here for its evolution.
It is simply two circles with a seam from neck to forehead. I loved the design on the sweater and wanted to capture it.
It is an very versatile design.
It is itchy but a lighweight scarf wrapped around the head first gives ear and itch protection. And this is not a hat to be taken lightly!
