Trends

Yet another article in the paper about how the colour orange is the latest trend and if you don't want to wear it or accessorize your home with it then orange flowers for your garden are just the thing. This got me wondering.

Are trends something we wish to know about so we can follow them?  Is a trend noticed (as in a collective consciousness)  or manipulated (Madison Ave)?  Is our response positive or negative to a trend?  How does a trend differ from a fad? Why is orange a trend and not a fad?  Is a twenty-year old going to react differently to being called "trendy" than a forty-year-old?  Or a sixty-year-old?

Good ol' Oxford cleared (some of) my confusion with its definitions of both "trend" and "fad": so – if orange persists and pervails beyond the next fashion season, I will consider it a trend.

Here was my introduction to it.
