Over the years animals have brought their babies for a viewing: squirrels, raccoons. This mother deer (click on photos to enlarge) appeared last week with four freckled babies. Four is an unusual number of fawns for a doe; perhaps this was mother and auntie; perhaps it was a play group. In any case they trotted down the side street, crossed the road, then – and this is what makes me think it was a 'viewing' – she paused and looked back at the three of us who were gazing at her (two with cameras) and simply stood for a 'viewable' length of time. Such has been my experience, over the years, with squirrels and raccoons and my admiration and praise and congratulations seem appreciated.
Animals also bring us gifts. A few crows came by as I was eating lunch outdoors at a restaurant where I regularly am. They know I someitmes, by accident or on purpose, drop something on the ground. This time (and they have done this before) two perched on the roof edge above me; one dropped the squashed, rusty bottle cap; the other tossed down the tuft of grass-in-earth. When I picked up the 'treasures' and put them carefully in a folded napkin, they flew away.
