  • Clothespin dolls; miniatures

    These are English pedlar dolls made from wooden clothes pins in a 1:12 scale.  I created them nearly thirty years ago for a show at House Sol Gallery in Georgetown, Ontario where John and Gisela Sommer continue to reside, a nice constant in my life of many moves. 

    The dolls all sold but I have this picture to remind me of the challenge and the fun that went into their making.  Getting objects to scale is more picky than anything but making material meant for a human-sized body to drape and have the pattern look right  on a person 1/12 our size is difficult.  That is why miniaturists will knit with piano wire and will  split wool yarn into a very fine thinness or get very excited over fabric with a high thread count and soft flow in a teeny pattern repeat. 

    I wonder where these ladies walked off to………
