Origami is Japanese for folding (ori) paper (gami). Paper is fibre from trees. Wool is fibre from sheep. Keito is wool fibre. Orikeito. Folding of wool. But not directly.
My thoughts are definitely origami- influenced when I take a crochet hook and wool and manipulate stitches in such a way that they crowd and crowd and crowd in on each other in a restricted space and then fold in on themselves into a hyperbolic shape and I think strongly of folding with paper.
In traditional origami I manipulate the paper in described folds and the result is the intended object of an animal or flower or box or shape. A direct result.
In crocheting a hyperbolic shape, the fingers and hook and yarn make loop after loop in a circle and then around the circle and around the circle and it is flat and then suddenly it begins to curve and then curl and – fold! By my doing but not by my doing. This sometimes happen with paper. But then it stops. Sort of. With yarn – it can just keep on going.
And those folds are pliable. They easily move.
Something fascinating is happening here. I don't understand it but I can feel something.
